Portrait of a Nepali Man : Preview

So portraits can feel more intimidating than many other subjects. Whilst a little more accuracy can be needed, we can still approach them in exactly the same way as any other subject and still get great results. That being simple yet accurate large shapes of light and shadow that underpin the painting. Keeping the colours simple, and keeping the details until right at the end - the decorations on top!

In this tutorial, you will learn how to analyse the face: what to look for, what's important and what we can disregard. Then how to interpret this as a watercolourist to create a painting.

You will learn one of the common themes across all faces, which once you know you will see in most faces, and it is so useful as a painter.

We will also look at working wet into wet for longer into the painting; moving into darker tones and more creamy paint consistency whilst the first wash is still damp. This is a lot of fun.

My hope is that with a few little pointers, the odd little tip and trick, we can take the fear out of tackling portraits in watercolour and get you feeling a little more confident and having fun - two things watercolour loves!!
