As a surfer with a geography degree, Tom longed to give free rein to his creative instinct. He started by using graffiti pens to draw bright and colourful custom artwork on guitars, but the infinite variety of subjects, and the endless possibilities of other mediums was always beckoning him.
Subsequently daring to pick up a brush, his encounter with more traditional mediums, like oil and acrylic, opened a world of imaginative inspiration. He hasn’t looked back since. For the last ten years, Tom has flourished as a professional artist.
Whilst he loves painting a wide variety of subjects, especially if the fall of light is exciting, Tom frequently returns to where is first two passions: painting wildlife, in particular birds.
“Previously I worked in just acrylics and oils, but once I started exploring Watercolour I immediately fell in love! The fluidity of watercolour makes it the perfect medium for catching the fleeting character, movement and energy of birds, as well as being a completely joyous medium to paint any subject!”
Despite being born about as far from the sea as is possible in the UK, for most of his life Tom has had a deep connection with the coast. After living on the Gower for close to a decade, life took him back inland for several years. Finally, in late 2022 he and his family made the move back to the Welsh Coast. Their new home in Pembrokeshire, with its fluid light and moods, and its wildlife, has injected a whole new level of inspiration and joy in to all of Tom's work.
Alongside co-hosting the widely successful Podcast, “Ask an Artist”, Tom also has his own Podcast, “Creative Perspectives” where, through interviews with artists, he endeavours to answer the question, “How does creativity shape our lives?” Certainly, for Tom creativity has helped him to carve out a unique and fulfilling life.
Where possible Tom likes to combine his art work with conservation efforts close to his heart. As well as involvement with various group exhibitions geared towards raising funds for wildlife and conservation; he also contributes a portion of sales each year to UK based Organisations such as WWT (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust); and to date has raised multiple thousands of pounds for these causes.
Tom has been shortlisted and highly commend for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the year multiple time. A couple of years ago he also began a large-scale mural for the restaurant of a parrot rescue centre in Italy.
Tom has also become a highly regarded, and much sought after tutor. He teaches and demonstrates regularly throughout the year, both online and in person, as well as running painting holidays in North Devon, and soon in Pembrokeshire, too.
He finds real joy in sharing his knowledge and helping others on their own artistic journey. For him it is an important part of being an artist, as none of us could be here without those who came before us pathing the way and sharing their knowledge.
