In this tutorial of a glorious sunlit Stag, we will be looking at how to see and create a feeling of light.
The trick here is making light itself the subject.
This might sound like some advanced approach, but I promise you it’s not…
...and not only will it make your paintings more exciting and dramatic…learning to look for and paint light makes tackling any subject much, much easier!
We will paint this one in simple, easy-to-follow steps, a little at a time, eventually bringing everything together to create the whole painting.
You will learn:
- How to stop painting things and start painting light and shadow instead
- How to break every area into either light or shadow
- How each area then has a specific paint consistency to match its tone
- How to simply create these areas with generous washes that flow together
- How to trap light on the main subject and setting
We’ll also introduce a few slightly trickier techniques along the way, including pulling out paint to create shafts of light, and using small touches of opaque white for those final pops of sparkle.
A really eye-catching subject, a few exciting challenges, but tackled calmly and step by step. With simple techniques, you’ll end up with a painting with strong light, bold drama, and a subject that really glows.
