Continuing the theme of simplifying a complex subject, we take a trip to Italy to tackle some boats and buildings in the beautiful Vernazza.
There is a huge amount going on in this subject, with lots of detail in the reference photos. So, we take a good look at what are to become the most important features, and then what we can simplify. I will also show you the importance of creating a fore, middle and background, and how this can really help keep us on track with simplification, ultimately creating a more successful painting (but also making the whole process a lot easier!)
There’s loads of colour in this one, and we will be running with that theme, but of course, those all-important tonal values - the light and shadow - are what we will use to bring this all together and make it a working painting!
Very finally, the boats in the foreground are a great opportunity to show you the use of dry brush darks, and thick opaque colour lights, for those all important finishing touches.
