This tutorial is all about giving the impression of our subject, without needing to capture every detail and make it exactly like the photo.
Markings, spots and patterns are a fantastic opportunity to add interest, texture and excitement to any subject; but if we are not careful they can cause issues with a painting becoming too complex.
Join me in painting this tawny owl where we cover some simple concepts around interpreting and painting markings. We do so in a way which is still sensitive to our subject - bringing out the best of it - without going overboard on complexity.
A cheeky bonus topic is working wet in wet within large light areas; giving the end result an almost dreamy softness to it - yet still with the contrast and tones needed to bring it all together.
