Is watercolour possibly the best medium for creating dramatic skies? I tend to think so, and that is what this particular tutorial is all about - creating dramatic and exciting skies (and having fun with it!)
What I love is the way the water and pigment flow together so beautifully, often giving us effects we could have never imagined, but that somehow are so much more interesting than we could have planned.
If I can let you into a little secret: I was terrified of painting skies in watercolour for years. They always looked so fantastic in other artists' paintings I thought there must be some super special technique or approach that would take years to master. Little did I know that actually, the medium does a lot of the work for you. In fact, the skies become better and better the more we leave them alone.
Of course, there are a few little tricks and tips, and we still need to commit to the right tones and paint consistency etc. But once we know this, painting dramatic and exciting skies is a huge amount of fun.
I hope this tutorial will give you the confidence to dive into some big skies!!
