Whilst Tom loves painting a wide variety of subjects, especially if the light is doing something interesting, he is always drawn back to the place where his first two passions met; painting wildlife, in particular birds.

The key that really makes colour work? Of course, it’s tone!
In this tutorial, we bring colour and tone together.
There’s a touch of theory, but with a great practical exercise to put it into practice. You’ll learn how to lighten and darken colour properly, not just with water, but through colour choices too.
In the second half, we turn a previous tonal study into a full colour painting, focusing on light, shadow, and how paint consistency and colour choices support your values (always keeping things simple and easy to follow, and enjoyable)
So yes, colour is where the fun is… but tone is what holds it all together. Get that balance right, and your paintings will start to sing!
