In this tutorial on some colourful plums and foliage, we continue with a close look at the usefulness of tonal values in tackling a wide range of subjects.
We will use the simple process of lights, gentle shadow, and deep shadow to tackle what could become a very complex subject - but we are going to keep the painting, the tonal values and the colour palette very simple, and see what we end up with.
I touch on composition, cropping our subject and creating a painting, rather than copying exactly.
The nature of a subject like this allows us to look far beyond trying to paint the object in front of us, and allows us to really dive deep into this idea of analysing our subject in terms of shapes & tones, and then doing our best to paint it as simple shapes and tones too.
Often easier said than done, but if we can really learn to trust this approach and this process I know that it will solidly lay the foundations for all of your future painting.
Enjoy the shapes, enjoy the colours and have fun with those brushes!
