Painting with lots of contrast is a sure fire way to give a painting some drama, excitement and a good bit of oomph!
We don't alwys need to push contrast to the extreme, but when we do decide to there are a few key principles and little tricks which can really help.
In this tutorial I will take right form the initial thoughts and planning stages, through to painting lots of lovely deep darks to hold the painting together, and make it pop.
From a technical point of view this tutorial of the two boats is also a great oppurtunity to look how to mix deep rich darks, and also how to add those little hits of details which can bring a painting to life. We will also touch briefly on painting relfections (not as hard as it seems).
Whilst Tom loves painting a wide variety of subjects, especially if the light is doing something interesting, he is always drawn back to the place where his first two passions met; painting wildlife, in particular birds.
"The free flowing and immediate nature of watercolour seems to lend itself so well to capturing the fleeting moments of wildlife; along with their movement, character and colours"
Tom's work has become widely collected in the UK and more more recently, internationally.
He has been a highly commended finalist in the World renowned Wildlife Artist of the Year, on several occasions.
Tom has also become a highly regarded, and much sought after tutor. As well as running his own workshops, he travels all over the UK teaching and demonstration for Art Groups & Societies. He also leads painting holidays in beautiful rural France.
