Plum and Two Leaves – Simple is Effective! : Preview

I increasingly love painting these Back to Basics tutorials, and this one was a lot of fun!

They’re great if you’re early in your watercolour journey, as well as a reminder that a simple, easy-to-follow process (with a little practice!) can yield really fantastic results.

In painting this plum and two leaves, we really dive into wet-in-wet work, specifically working an entire area (an individual leaf or plum) wet-into-wet, from light to mid-tones to deep darks, then calling that bit done before moving on to the next.

This allows us to get to grips with wet-in-wet, paint consistency, paper dampness, and ultimately just feeling comfortable moving water and pigment around on the page... but within relatively small and achievable areas.

The big bonus being... yours does not have to look anything like mine!

In fact, I’d encourage you to play here and see how you find it. As long as you can see some lighter areas, some middle areas and some dark areas overall, you’ll have form and depth in a very simple way. Everything else is a bonus!

You can make this one as simple or as involved as you like!!
