This tutorial is all about getting paint on paper in a fun and simple way.
This is all about getting those washes and marks on the page, watching colours mingle, and seeing how quickly a subject appears. This is the magic of watercolour and what makes it so addictive.
The focus here is simply on enjoying the medium and finding your way with it in an easy, approachable manner.
This works as a standalone tutorial, but it’s also part of the Beginner’s Roadmap, designed to get you up and running right at the start of your journey. It’s the first tutorial where we begin putting the ideas from the previous videos into practice on some simple subjects.
Using small, satisfying subjects like flowers, feathers, shells, butterflies and cherries, you’ll explore a whole range of foundational techniques without it ever feeling heavy or overcomplicated.
These are lovely little paintings in their own right, but they’re also the perfect way to practise key skills, step by step.
In this tutorial, you will learn:
• Wet into wet on a small scale
• How to layer one colour over another
• Working from watery mixes to thicker paint
• Making interesting and expressive brushmarks
• How to leave the white of the paper
• Negative painting
• Trapping the light
• Glazing shadows
• Wet on dry
It’s a great beginner-friendly tutorial, but also a really useful refresh for more experienced painters who want to reconnect with the playful, essential building blocks of watercolour.
A simple, enjoyable way to learn, practise, and start making things that feel alive on the page.
Whilst Tom loves painting a wide variety of subjects, especially if the light is doing something interesting, he is always drawn back to the place where his first two passions met: painting wildlife, in particular birds.
"The free-flowing and immediate nature of watercolour seems to lend itself so well to capturing the fleeting moments of wildlife; along with their movement, character and colours"
Tom's work has become widely collected in the UK and, more recently, internationally.
He has been a highly commended finalist in the world-renowned Wildlife Artist of the Year on several occasions.
Tom has also become a highly regarded and much sought-after tutor. As well as running his own workshops, he travels all over the UK teaching and demonstrating for Art Groups & Societies. He also leads painting holidays in beautiful rural France.
